Blackberry Config

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

I finally got fixed up with a Blackberry 8800 a couple of weeks ago. The debitel sales people were totally useless, but I got a good price so I was happy. It took them 3 days to activate, as the Debitel outlet had sent the fax to the wrong number at their head-office. In any case, their help-line was useless - 3 calls resulted in 3 different reports of status (activated, just wait, no-fax received hence not active and not being activated), and additionally wrong web-site information for getting hooked up for email-push. Anyway, after a bout of googling I found the following infomation, which now allows me to send/receive emails/mms/sms etc and also use stuff like google maps (mixed with GPS this is pretty cool) and ssh terminal into my servers. Here are the core details:

Debitel/T-Mobile
APN host:
private ip address - use internet.t1.de
public ip address - use internet.t-mobile (that’s right no trailing .de)

The difference here is that the private ip address setup also restricts you to only some ports (http, smtp, etc). The public one lets through all (ssh for example).

APN username/password: this is sent to you via sms from T-Mobile HotSpot.
Something like your phonenumber@t-mobile.de and a password.

To enable the blackberry email push, goto

http://www.intstantemail.t-mobile.de

Create a new account and fill in all the details. Takes about 20 mins to activate.

You can also access gmail and other imap accounts without email push.
